RESOLUTION
requesting the Department of Education to review infrastructural and student capacity needs of the Kailua-kalaheo complex area and plan for a new intermediate school in the Kailua-KALAHEO COMPLEX AREA.
WHEREAS, the schools, teachers, parents, and surrounding community of the Kailua-Kalaheo complex area believe that it is in the best interest of the State and all windward students for the Kailua-Kalaheo complex area to have its own intermediate school; and
WHEREAS, studies have shown that students in the intermediate or middle school age group go through critical transition steps in overall development and student achievement; and
WHEREAS, the students of Enchanted Lake elementary school, Kaelepulu elementary school, Keolu elementary school, and Maunawili elementary school deserve their own intermediate school; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of an intermediate school in the Kailua-Kalaheo complex area will also help teachers, administrators, parents, and students when students transition to other schools within the same complex; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Education is requested to review infrastructural and student capacity needs of the Kailua-Kalaheo complex area and, if deemed appropriate, plan for a new intermediate school in this area; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education is requested to involve teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community members in the review and plans, which are to include but not be limited to:
(1) Addressing the needs of the Kailua-Kalaheo complex area feeder elementary schools and students;
(2) Recommending whether to build an intermediate school and the reasons for the recommendation; and
(3) The siting and design of an intermediate or middle school; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education is requested to report its findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2006; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Education, and the Superintendent for the Kailua-Kalaheo complex area.
