Pursuant to House Concurrent Resolution No. 151, H.D. 1, S.D. 1 (2003), the Working Group on Universal Health Care will be convening an informational briefing on the following:

Driving Forces in Hawaii’s Healthcare System –

Overview: Cliff Cisco, HMSA

Access:

  1. Beth Giesting, Hawaii Primary Care Association
  2. Tom Driskill, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation

Demands:

  1. Expectations: Chris Pablo, Kaiser Permamente
  2. Consumer Responsibility: Max Botticelli, M.D., Universal Health Alliance

Controlling Utilization: Bob McClay, AlohaCare

Technology: Roger Drue, Hawaii Pacific Health

Quality and Patient Safety: Melinda Ashton, M.D., Hawaii Pacific Health

Workforce: Hawaii Medical Association

The Panel will be asked to make a short presentation highlighting each "driving force" and related issues. Provide the committee with answers to the following questions:

  1. How do these driving forces work together?
  2. What do you consider the greatest challenges facing Hawaii’s healthcare system?
  3. What do you consider the most important policy issues for government to address, related to the healthcare system?
  4. What is the first thing the legislature needs to do to address the health care needs of the aging population?
  5. What do you see as emerging policy issues?
