SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

requesting a study on the feasibility of developing hawaii markets for wood waste.

 

WHEREAS, wood waste is generated when contractors and developers cut down trees to clear the land for development and construction projects; and

WHEREAS, trees such as kiawe and ironwood, among others, are often cleared during construction projects and discarded in county landfills; and

WHEREAS, there are businesses in Hawaii that are currently using, or that potentially could use, the wood from these trees; and

WHEREAS, such use could result in increased jobs for local people and revenue for the State; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism is responsible for developing new markets for recycled materials; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism is requested to conduct a study on the feasibility of developing Hawaii markets for wood waste generated by the clearing of trees during development and construction activities, to support local businesses; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department shall report its findings and recommendations, including any proposed implementing legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days before the convening of the Regular Session of 2004; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism.
