HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

97

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2003

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO PROCLAIM APRIL 19 AS PATRIOT'S DAY.

WHEREAS, April 19 marks the date in 1775 when the towns of Lexington and Concord were marched upon by British regulars in an effort to confiscate munitions held by local militias; and

WHEREAS, the result was the "shot heard around the world" at Lexington and the rout of the redcoats at Concord; and

WHEREAS, the states of Massachusetts, Maine, and Wisconsin observe April 19 as Patriot's Day each year; and

WHEREAS, unlike the celebration of July 4, Patriot's Day serves to remind citizens of our revolution and the sacrifices endured during that eight-year struggle; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that the Governor is respectfully requested to proclaim April 19 of every year as Patriot's Day in the State in commemoration of the opening events of the War of the Revolution and the struggle through which the nation passed in its early days; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Patriot's Day is not and shall not be construed to be a state holiday; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
