RECOGNIZING THE YWCA OF O’AHU 2003 LEADERLUNCHEON HONOREES NALEEN NAUPAKA ANDRADE, M.D., CAROL MCNAMEE, JEAN ROLLES, KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS AND NA LOIO.
WHEREAS, the YWCA of O’ahu LeaderLuncheon is the largest women’s fundraising event of the year in Hawaii to honor women and organizations that exemplify the mission of the YWCA to enrich and empower the lives of women and their families, where individual women are recognized for their leadership, professional and volunteer achievement, excellence as role models and for their contributions to the community, and, further, where organizations are singled out for their organizational, employment policies and initiatives that enhance the lives of women employees and their families; and
WHEREAS, NALEEN NAUPAKA ANDRADE, M.D. is a pioneer in the medical field who, as a Native Hawaiian woman physician, advocates for Native Hawaiian rights for equal education and healthcare, and who nurtures and mentors young Hawaiian women who train in medicine and go on to become leaders and "healers" in their communities, and
WHEREAS, CAROL H. MCNAMEE founded Mothers against Drunk Driving in Hawaii in 1984 and has worked tirelessly for the safety of the children and families – drivers, passengers and pedestrians -- by coming to the Legislature to lobby for laws to reduce alcohol-related traffic deaths by 40% since 1982, and
WHEREAS, JEAN E. ROLLES, a member of an outstanding local family, is a role model for women because of her numerous accomplishments in academics, business, and as a community leader who is involved in a wide variety of worthwhile endeavors, and, finally, as a visionary who recognized early the importance of Japanese business in Hawaii, and
WHEREAS, KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS offers outstanding education to the children of Hawaii and creates a positive message of what it means to be Hawaiian, awards approximately $26 million in scholarships and financial aid to applicants each year, and encourages young women of Hawaiian ancestry to strive and achieve their greatest potential, and
WHEREAS, NA LOIO provides immigration services and advocacy focused on protecting the civil rights of newly arrived, long-time resident immigrants and refugees, women and minorities, those who are the poorest and most vulnerable in our community, and as an employer demands and receives high performance and participation on the part of its women employees, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that this body hereby commends NALEEN NAUPAKA ANDRADE, M.D., CAROL H. MCNAMEE, JEAN E. ROLLES, KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS and NA LOIO for their success and community service to the people of Hawaii, congratulates them upon being recognized as inductees to the Academy of Honorees of the YWCA of O’ahu on May 9, 2003, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, and extends to them its warmest ALOHA and best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.
