HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

Honoring the life, memory, and legacy of gladys kamakakuokalani ‘ainoa brandt and extending condolences and deepest sympathy to her family.

 

 

WHEREAS, on the evening of January 15, 2003, the Hawaiian people and the State of Hawaii, along with the family and many friends of GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT, suffered a great loss as the fearless female warrior peacefully departed from this world after a life full of successes; and

WHEREAS, an eyewitness to many of the seminal events of Hawai`i’s modern history, GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT attended and mourned at the funeral of Hawai`i’s last reigning monarch, Queen Liliu`uokalani in 1917, lived through the creation of the Hawaiian Homelands Act created by Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole in 1921, the attack on Pearl Harbor, Martial law, World War II, Statehood, and the modern Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement; and

WHEREAS, GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT was born in 1906 in Honolulu, graduated from McKinley High School in 1925, became an educator, and thereafter dedicated her life to educating Hawai'i's children, starting her career in the Ke`anae Maui public schools in 1927; becoming the first native Hawaiian principal of The Kamehameha School for Girls in 1963; and becoming the Director of the High School Division of Kamehameha Schools in 1969; and

WHEREAS, from 1983 to 1989, GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT served on the Board of Regents at the University of Hawai`i, including four years as its Chairperson, and was instrumental in founding the U.H. Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, which bears her name; and

WHEREAS, in the spirit of the Ali`i of the past, GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT left a one million dollar endowment to the University of Hawai`i Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies which ensures that her legacy will continue; and

WHEREAS, GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT's life’s work was education, and she has been credited with saying, "In education, not anger, resides our future. In education, not ignorance resides our hope. In education, not fear, resides justice"; and

WHEREAS, GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT served as a trustee for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in 1998 and 2000; and

WHEREAS, beloved for her work, grace, dignity, compassion and determination, GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT affected nearly every sector of life in Hawai`i, and she will be sorely missed as the State has truly lost one of its most accomplished, admired, and treasured individuals; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawai`i, Regular Session of 2003, that this body hereby honors the life, the memory and the legacy of GLADYS KAMAKAKUOKALANI ‘AINOA BRANDT, and extends its deepest condolences to her family.
