STATE OF HAWAII |

OFFERING HEARTFELT THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES.
WHEREAS, the armed forces of the United States, with the uncommon courage and skill of the men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard under superb leadership and superior arms and technology, have swiftly and overwhelmingly destroyed all organized resistance and liberated Iraq from the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein; and
WHEREAS, although the swift and complete military victory was achieved with a relatively low casualty rate, those who lost loved ones in the war, including the family of our very own hero, Sergeant Eugene Williams of Waipahu, are also casualties deserving our deepest sympathies and condolences; and
WHEREAS, the armed forces of the United States are now supporting the restoration of law and order and essential services such as electricity and water and are faced with tremendous difficulties in the postwar reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq in rebuilding a nation based on democracy, freedom, and the rule of law; and
WHEREAS, thousands of men and women of our armed forces are also currently deployed to countries such as Afghanistan, Bosnia, the Korean and Sinai peninsulas, and the Philippines in defense of their freedoms; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that this body:
(1) Thanks and congratulates the officers and enlisted men and women of the armed forces of the United States for their brilliant and overwhelming victory in ousting the brutal Saddam Hussein dictatorship and freeing the people of Iraq from three decades of terror, brutality, and oppression;
(2) Acknowledges the sacrifices endured by our armed forces in the many deployments to far-off countries as part of the United States' efforts to protect them from terrorists and other threats to their democracies; and
(3) Expresses its deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to those who lost loved ones during the war and especially to the family and friends of Hawaii's own hero, Sergeant Eugene Williams of Waipahu;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to General Richard B. Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Thomas B. Fargo, Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, and to the family of Sergeant Eugene Williams.
