RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO SERVE KONA COFFEE AT THE WHITE HOUSE.
WHEREAS, Kona coffee, grown on the Big Island, is distinguished by the extra care taken throughout every step that creates a delicate yet flavorful brew with a rich aroma that is famous throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, coffee was first brought to Kona by Samuel Reverend Ruggles from cuttings from Brazil and has been produced in Hawaii continuously since the early 1800's; and
WHEREAS, today, the Kona region contains approximately 600 small, usually three to seven acres in size, independent coffee farms that produce over two million pounds annually; and
WHEREAS, Hawaiian coffee is the only commercially cultivated coffee in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, the White House is the Nation's first residence; and should serve to its international guest the finest foods and beverages our nation produces, now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, the Senate concurring, that we respectfully request that President Bush and his wife, Laura, show their aloha by serving Hawaii's Kona Coffee on a regular basis to their guests.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush, The White House, 1776 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, DC 20500.
