WAIMANALO LEGISLATORS QUESTION PURPOSE OF WAIMANALO "CHAMBER OF COMMERCE" BREAKFAST MEETING

HONOLULU—Waimanalo legislators Senator Fred Hemmings and Representative Joe Gomes are questioning the real intent of a breakfast meeting hosted by the "Waimanalo Chamber of Commerce."

According to the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce, they have no record of an organization called the "Waimanalo Chamber of Commerce." In addition, there is no telephone listing for this organization, nor is it registered with the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

"While I wholeheartedly endorse a Chamber of Commerce to help identify and assist Waimanalo with its needs, I sure hope this effort is not a façade for a gaming effort or some other political agenda," said Hemmings.

"I share Fred's concern," said Gomes. "Gaming has far too many negatives. It is not the answer to create a diverse, robust economy that provides good jobs and a healthy social environment. Rather, the key to this doable goal is to change the political status quo and its obstructionist attitude so that government works with business – not against it," concluded Gomes.

Hemmings and Gomes say they urge those interested in the welfare of the Waimanalo community to attend this meeting, especially those who want to make sure that a Waimanalo Chamber of Commerce serves the people of Waimanalo, not some special interests.

The meeting's agenda includes legislative issues aimed at helping farmers, contractors, and business taxes.

The meeting is slated for Wednesday, December 5 at the Olomana Golf Course meeting room from 7 to 8 AM.
