STAND. COM. REP. NO.1041-02
Honolulu, Hawaii
, 2002
RE: H.R. No. 107
Honorable Calvin K.Y. Say
Speaker, House of Representatives
Twenty-First State Legislature
Regular Session of 2002
State of Hawaii
Sir:
Your Committee on Higher Education, to which was referred H.R. No. 107 entitled:
"HOUSE RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF KA LEO O HAWAI`I,"
begs leave to report as follows:
The purpose of this resolution is to congratulate Ka Leo O Hawaii (Ka Leo) and the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa for maintaining their commitment to a free student press throughout 80 years of tradition.
UH and UH Student Publications submitted testimony in support of this resolution.
Your Committee finds that on September 19, 1922, Ka Leo began as a weekly newspaper called The Hawaii Mirror. Two months later, the tradition of Ka Leo was established and now serves as a training ground for community leaders and professional journalists and photographers.
Your Committee finds that UH has remained committed to a free college press by allowing students to make their own decisions about what should be covered. Ka Leo has been a newspaper from which original ideas stem and news is uncovered, often before its professional counterparts. Ka Leo is one of the few college newspapers where students handle all aspects of its operation and has won national awards for editorial and advertising excellence.
Your Committee finds that Ka Leo's circulation of 14,000 makes it the sixth largest daily newspaper in the state and deserving of congratulatory response from the Legislature.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Higher Education that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.R. No. 107 and recommends its adoption.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Higher Education,
