STAND. COM. REP. NO.1313
Honolulu, Hawaii
, 2001
RE: S.R. No. 72
Honorable Robert Bunda
President of the Senate
Twenty-First State Legislature
Regular Session of 2001
State of Hawaii
Sir:
Your Committee on Transportation, Military Affairs and Government Operations, to which was referred S.R. No. 72 entitled:
"SENATE RESOLUTION SUPPORTING INCREASING THE DEPTH OF BARBERS POINT HARBOR,"
begs leave to report as follows:
The purpose of this measure is to express the Legislature's support for increasing the depth of Barbers Point Harbor.
Your Committee received testimony in support of this measure from the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Barbers Point Harbor Advisory Council, Hawaii Metal Recycling Co., and the Estate of James Campbell.
Your Committee finds that Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor is the second busiest commercial harbor in the State. Some vessels that operate within the harbor have a forty-five foot draft when fully loaded.
Your Committee understands that the DOT and the United States Army Corps of Engineers are working together with the local community to provide various improvements at the harbor, including dredging to a proposed depth of forty-two feet.
Your Committee believes that the harbor should be dredged to a depth deep enough to accommodate all vessels that may potentially use the harbor. In addition, your Committee finds that dredging the harbor to its deepest viable depth at one time will minimize the adverse impact on fishers and the local community.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Transportation, Military Affairs and Government Operations that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of S.R. No. 72 and recommends its adoption.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Transportation, Military Affairs and Government Operations,
