STAND. COM. REP. NO.845

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: S.B. No. 887

S.D. 1

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committees on Transportation, Military Affairs and Government Operations and Economic Development and Technology, to which was referred S.B. No. 887 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO STATE PARKS,"

beg leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to rename Sand Island state recreational area as the 100th Infantry Battalion state recreation area.

Your Committees received testimony in opposition to this measure from the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Your Committees recognize the valiant efforts of the 100th Infantry Battalion during World War II, and believe that it is appropriate to honor their brave deeds as a Hawaii fighting unit.

However, your Committees find that renaming the park is not a proper tribute to the men who served in that Battalion. Therefore, your Committees amended this measure to require the Department of Defense and the Department of Land and Natural Resources to work together, in consultation with veterans of the 100th Infantry Battalion, to select a site and prepare plans for a fitting memorial at Sand Island state recreation area to honor the brave men who served in that Battalion.

As affirmed by the records of votes of the members of your Committees on Transportation, Military Affairs and Government Operations and Economic Development and Technology that are attached to this report, your Committees are in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 887, as amended herein, and recommends that it pass Second Reading in the form attached hereto as S.B. No. 887, S.D. 1, and be placed on the calendar for Third Reading.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committees on Transportation, Military Affairs and Government Operations and Economic Development and Technology,
