STAND. COM. REP. NO. 63

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: S.B. No. 803

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Agriculture, to which was referred S.B. No. 803 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO CONTROL PLANT PESTS,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to appropriate funds to develop controls for plant pests.

Your Committee received testimony in favor of this measure from the Department of Agriculture, Pineapple Growers Association of Hawaii, and Maui Invasive Species Committee.

Invasive plant pests continually threaten Hawaii's native plant species, forests, and watersheds. Your Committee finds that further development of biological controls for plant pests is necessary to properly safeguard Hawaii's plants and watersheds.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Agriculture that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B.

No. 803 and recommends that it pass Second Reading and be referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Agriculture,
