STAND. COM. REP. NO.763

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: S.B. No. 684

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Ways and Means, to which was referred S.B. No. 684 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO FEES OF THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to raise the statutory fees that may be charged by sheriffs and police officers for various services, including service of summons and subpoenas.

Your Committee finds that the fees that may be charged by sheriffs and police officers for these services have not changed in ten years. Meanwhile many costs, in particular, fuel costs, have risen dramatically. Officers serving on the neighbor islands are especially severely affected. Inasmuch as the fees for service of summons and subpoenas are paid by the person using the service, and the public service provided by sheriffs and police officers can occasionally be tinged with potential danger, the modest increases are justified.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Ways and Means that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 684 and recommends that it pass Third Reading.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Ways and Means,
