STAND. COM. REP. NO.785

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: S.B. No. 1406

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Ways and Means, to which was referred S.B. No. 1406 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO HOLIDAYS,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to rename the state holiday "Admission Day" to be "Statehood Day."

Your Committee finds that the name "Admission Day" is confusing to a significant segment of the public. Visitors to Hawaii, recent residents, and out-of-state students do not make the connection with statehood, as other states commonly refer to the day celebrating the day they were admitted to the Union as "Statehood Day." Admission offices at schools, universities, and hospitals often receive inquiries concerning the nature of the holiday.

Your Committee finds that the name "Statehood Day" clearly reflects the nature and purpose of the holiday, and is a better and more appropriate choice.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Ways and Means that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 1406 and recommends that it pass Third Reading.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Ways and Means,
