STAND. COM. REP. NO.1809

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: H.C.R. No. 93

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Economic Development and Technology, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 93 entitled:

"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION URGING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO DESIGNATE A NEW NATIONAL PARK FROM KEONE'O'IO TO KANALOA POINT ON THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF MAUI,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to urge the federal government to designate a new national park from Keone'o'io to Kanaloa Point on the southeast coast of Maui.

Your Committee finds that this area is comprised of relatively unweathered lava and pockets of unique native plants and animals. Hundreds of tourists visit this area each day, providing a unique opportunity for them to view, learn, and appreciate this important area. Further, enforcement is seriously needed in this area as it is currently unprotected from operators of four-wheel-drive vehicles who are unknowingly destroying valuable resources. National park designation can provide the appropriate protection to preserve this important area.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Economic Development and Technology that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 93 and recommends its adoption.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Economic Development and Technology,
