STAND. COM. REP. NO. 1715

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: H.C.R. No. 89

H.D. 1

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Tourism and Intergovernmental Affairs, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 89, H.D. 1, entitled:

"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY TO CONVENE A TASK FORCE TO STUDY SAFE ACCESS TO VIEW AND LEARN ABOUT HAWAII VOLCANOES,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to request the Hawaii Tourism Authority to convene a task force to study means of providing safe access to view volcano eruptions and establish a visitor observatory to offer safety and educational information to volcano visitors.

Testimony in support of this measure was received from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Hawaii Tourism Authority and a member of its board, and the Mayor of Hawaii.

Your Committee finds that Hawaii is fortunate to have a volcano that can be viewed in relative safety, and that has not had the destructive impact of volcanoes in other regions. The study in this measure would help visitors and residents take advantage of this good fortune in a safe and educational manner.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Tourism and Intergovernmental Affairs that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 89, H.D. 1, and recommends its adoption.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Tourism and Intergovernmental Affairs,
