STAND. COM. REP. NO. 1707

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: H.C.R. No. 75

H.D. 1

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 75, H.D. 1, entitled:

"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO NEGOTIATE WITH KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS, BISHOP MUSEUM, AND THE OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS TO LEASE KALIHI VALLEY NATURE PARK FOR A NATIVE HAWAIIAN EDUCATION CENTER,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to encourage and facilitate the development of a native Hawaiian education center at the Kalihi Valley Nature Park.

Your Committee received testimony in support of this measure from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Bishop Museum, and Kalihi Valley Neighborhood Board No. 16.

Your Committee finds that perpetuating native Hawaiian culture is important. Kalihi Valley Nature Park has been found to contain culturally and historically significant features including irrigation systems, taro terraces, and other structures. These cultural and historical sites are unique educational resources that should be preserved and studied.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Hawaiian Affairs that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 75, H.D. 1, and recommends its adoption.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Hawaiian Affairs,
