STAND. COM. REP. NO.1713
Honolulu, Hawaii
, 2001
RE: H.C.R. No. 161
S.D. 1
Honorable Robert Bunda
President of the Senate
Twenty-First State Legislature
Regular Session of 2001
State of Hawaii
Sir:
Your Committee on Education, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 161 entitled:
"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS TO CONDUCT A FEASIBILITY STUDY ON ESTABLISHING A RESOURCE CENTER FOR STUDENTS, PARENTS AND TEACHERS ON THE ISLAND OF KAUAI,"
begs leave to report as follows:
The purpose of this measure is to request the Kamehameha Schools to conduct a feasibility study on establishing a resource center for students, parents, and teachers on the island of Kauai.
Your Committee heard testimony in support of the measure from the Kauai District Superintendent of Education, Department of Education East Kauai Complex School Renewal Specialist, Department of Education Kekaha School, and Kamehameha Schools.
Your Committee finds that there exists an undeniable need to assist Native Hawaiian students and families in their pursuit of educational opportunities as three-quarters of the residents of Kawaihau and Waimea District are Native Hawaiians. The opportunity for an educational resource center would provide that common ground and foundation for parents, teachers, and students.
Your Committee has amended the measure by adding the Department of Education as the lead agency to conduct the feasibility study in conjunction with Kamehameha Schools in both the title and the body of the measure.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Education that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 161, as amended herein, and recommends its adoption in the form attached hereto as H.C.R. No. 161, S.D. 1.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Education,
