RE: H.B. No. 557

H.D. 2

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Education, to which was referred H.B. No. 557, H.D. 2, entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT AUTHORIZING THE ISSUANCE OF GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS AND MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE BERNICE PAUAHI BISHOP MUSEUM, OAHU,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to authorize the issuance of general obligation bonds and to appropriate funds for the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum's Science and Learning Center in Kakaako.

Your Committee received testimony in support of this measure from the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism, the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Community Development Authority, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and a concerned citizen.

Your Committee finds that the primary purpose of the Bishop Museum's Science Learning Center project is to provide school children and families in Hawaii with a state-of-the-art, interactive learning center that will showcase the latest breakthroughs in science and technology.

Your Committee finds that the Bishop Museum and the great cultural significance it represents will make an important contribution to the educational arts in Hawaii.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Education that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of H.B. No. 557, H.D. 2, and recommends that it pass Second Reading and be referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Education,
