Your Committee on Agriculture, to which was referred H.B. No. 210, H.D. 1, entitled:

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to appropriate funds for agricultural research and development to be performed by the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center.

Your Committee received testimony in favor of this measure from the Department of Agriculture, University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, Maui County Farm Bureau, Maui Pineapple Company, Ltd., Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Pineapple Growers Association of Hawaii, Hawaii Agriculture Research Center, Garst, Hawaii Forest Industry Association, Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company, Forest Solutions, Inc., and Dowling Company.

Your Committee finds that the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC) is an integral part of the agricultural research community serving the needs of Hawaii's farmers. HARC's projects have included macadamia nuts, forestry, coffee, sugarcane, soil, and other agricultural products. Your Committee finds that the appropriation to be expended by HARC as provided by this measure will further the growth and advancement of Hawaii's agriculture industry.

Your Committee has amended this measure by replacing its contents with the Senate version of this measure which appropriates $1,000,000 for the agricultural research.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Agriculture that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of H.B. No. 210, H.D. 1, as amended herein, and recommends that it pass Second Reading in the form attached hereto as H.B. No. 210, H.D. 1, S.D. 1, and be referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.
