Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: GOV. MSG. NO. 308

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 308, submitting for study and consideration the nominations of:

ISLAND BURIAL COUNCIL, ISLAND OF MOLOKAI

LAWRENCE K. AKI, ROXANNE L. FRENCH, LANCE M. DUNBAR, and PEARL HODGINS, for terms to expire June 30, 2005,

begs leave to report as follows:

Upon review of the testimony and statements submitted by the nominees, your Committee finds that each of the nominees has the necessary character, experience, and qualifications to serve on the Island Burial Council for the island of Molokai.

Your Committee received testimony in support of each nominee from the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Lawrence K. Aki has formerly served on the Island Burial Council in a diligent and conscientious manner for which the Department of Land and Natural Resources has expressed deep appreciation.

Roxanne L. French is being nominated as a regional representative. She works for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs on the island of Molokai and is well respected within the community.

Lance M. Dunbar is being nominated as a landowners’ representative. He is a long time Molokai resident and for many years was associated with the Bank of Hawaii as well as the Molokai Museum and Cultural Center.

Pearl Hodgins is being nominated as a regional representative and has also formerly served on the Island Burial Council in a diligent and conscientious manner for which the Department of Land and Natural Resources has expressed deep appreciation.

Your Committee finds that all nominees have been appointed based upon their credentials, integrity, and a desire to improve Maui's health planning through their service on the Island Burial Council for the island of Molokai.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Hawaiian Affairs that are attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, character, experience, and qualifications of the nominees, has found the nominees to be qualified for the positions to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nominations.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Hawaiian Affairs,
