STAND. COM. REP. NO. 1771
Honolulu, Hawaii
, 2001
Honorable Robert Bunda
President of the Senate
Twenty-First State Legislature
Regular Session of 2001
State of Hawaii
Sir:
Your Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 307, submitting for study and consideration the nominations of:
ISLAND BURIAL COUNCIL, ISLANDS OF MAUI AND LANAI
LESLIE A. KULOLOIO and MICHAEL P. MINN, for terms to expire June 30, 2005,
begs leave to report as follows:
Upon review of the testimony and statements submitted by the nominees, your Committee finds that each of the nominees has the necessary character, experience, and qualifications to serve on the Island Burial Council (Council) for the Islands of Maui and Lanai.
Your Committee received testimony in support of each nominee from the Department of Land and Natural Resources. A private citizen submitted testimony in opposition to the concept of members of the Island Burial Council being reappointed.
Leslie A. Kuloloio has been active in the Hawaiian community on Maui and has previously served on the Island Burial Council. Mr. Kuloloio has been a leader in preserving and protecting Hawaiian cultural sites as well as ancestral burial sites on Maui.
Michael P. Minn is being nominated for a second term as the regional representative from the Hana district. Mr. Minn has also been a leader in preserving and protecting Hawaiian cultural sites as well as ancestral burial sites on Maui and willingly shares his expertise during Council discussions.
Your Committee finds that all nominees have been appointed based upon their credentials, integrity, and a desire to improve Maui's health planning through their service on the Island Burial Council for the Islands of Maui and Lanai.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Hawaiian Affairs that are attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, character, experience, and qualifications of the nominees, has found the nominees to be qualified for the positions to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nominations.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Hawaiian Affairs,
JONATHAN CHUN, Chair |
