STAND. COM. REP. NO.1761

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: GOV. MSG. NO. 303

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Education, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 303, submitting for study and consideration the nominations of:

STATE FOUNDATION ON CULTURE AND ARTS COMMISSION

CORINE HAYASHI, for a term to expire June 30, 2004; and

EUNICE M. DEMELLO and ALFRED LAURETA for terms to expire June 30, 2005,

begs leave to report as follows:

Your Committee heard testimony in support of the nominees from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Upon review of the testimony and statements submitted by the nominees, your Committee finds that each of the nominees has the necessary character, experience, and qualifications to serve on the State Foundation on Culture and Arts.

Corine Hayashi is president and chief executive officer of HTH Corporation, a holding company comprised of three main enterprises. In this capacity, she is responsible for setting the direction and overseeing the operations of the corporation, which also includes HTH Advertising, an in-house agency, and various other real estate properties.

Eunice M. DeMello currently serves as the Chairperson of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Commission. She leads the monthly Commission meetings, attends many SFCA-sponsored events and activities, and actively promotes the proposed State Art Museum. Eunice M. DeMello provides decisive leadership, drawing upon her artist background, and she is well respected by her peers.

Alfred Laureta currently serves on the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts as the Kauai representative. He regularly attends the Commission's monthly meetings and actively participates in discussions and decision-making, drawing upon his legal background as judge and attorney.

Your Committee further finds that the nominees have been appointed based upon their credentials, integrity, and a desire to improve Hawaii's cultural development through their service on the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Education that are attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, character, experience, and qualifications of the nominees, has found the nominees to be qualified for the positions to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nominations.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Education,
