STAND. COM. REP. NO.1686

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: GOV. MSG. NO. 246

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Health and Human Services, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 246, submitting for study and consideration the nominations of:

STATE COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

FAYE W. KURREN and MAILE MEYER for terms to expire on June 30, 2005,

begs leave to report as follows:

Upon review of the testimony and statements submitted by the nominees, your Committee finds that the nominees have the necessary character, experience, and qualifications to serve on the State Commission on the Status of Women (Commission).

Testimony in support of both nominees was received from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, the current Interim Executive Director and a former Chair of the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women, and the Honolulu County Committee on the Status of Women.

Further testimony in support of Faye W. Kurren was received from the American Red Cross Hawaii State Chapter, March of Dimes, Pacific Management Consultants, Inc., and one individual. In addition, testimony in further support of Maile Meyer was received from the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse.

Faye W. Kurren is a graduate of the University of Hawaii Richardson School of Law. In her professional career, she has served as legal counsel to two large corporations, Vice President of Supply and International Marketing for BHP, Inc., and she currently serves as President of Tesoro Hawaii Corporation. Ms. Kurren also dedicates a substantial amount of her time to community service activities including serving as a board member of the American Red Cross, Aloha United Way, Girl Scout Council of Hawaii, Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, and Hawaii Business Roundtable.

Maile Meyer is a graduate of the University of California-Los Angeles with a Masters in Business Administration. She is a marketing consultant and successful entrepreneur having started and operated several of her own businesses that promote the art and products of Hawaii. Among her community service activities, Ms. Meyer serves as Director of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association and is a member of the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center Advisory Council, Daughter's of Hawaii Publications Committee, Hawaii Book Publishers Association, and Malama Hawaii.

Your Committee finds that the nominees are business and community leaders whose professional experiences and desire to intelligently address women's issues would be a great asset to the Commission.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Health and Human Services that are attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, character, experience, and qualifications of the nominees, has found the nominees to be qualified for the positions to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nominations.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Health and Human Services,
