STAND. COM. REP. NO. 1609
Honolulu, Hawaii
, 2001
Honorable Robert Bunda
President of the Senate
Twenty-First State Legislature
Regular Session of 2001
State of Hawaii
Sir:
Your Committee on Education, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 187, submitting for study and consideration the nominations of:
LYNN C. KINNEY and EUGENE N. TIWANAK to the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii for terms to expire June 30, 2005,
begs leave to report as follows:
Your Committee received written testimony in support of the nominees from the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii.
Your Committee received written testimony in support of Mr. Kinney from Laborers' International Union of North America Local 368, AFL-CIO, Painting and Decorating Contractors Association of Hawaii, Rosehill & Associates, Reinwald O'Conner & Playdon LLP, and Iron Worker's Stabilization Fund.
Your Committee received written testimony in support of Mr. Tiwanak from the Lieutenant Governor, County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation, Architects Pacific, Inc., St. Francis Medical Center, St. Francis Foundation of Hawaii, Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry, Borthwick Mortuary, Tamura's Wahiawa, and two trustees from the Lunalilo Trust.
Your Committee further finds that Mr. Kinney was confirmed in Spring 2000 to complete the term of a former member and brought to the Board extensive experience in the building trades unions and a sincere desire to serve the working people of Hawaii. He is also a veteran of three tours of duty in Vietnam and a board member of the Make a Wish Foundation.
Your Committee further finds that Mr. Tiwanak would bring to the Board a results-oriented approach and extensive experience in healthcare administration, planning, and program development from over 27 years with St. Francis Healthcare and eight years as a trustee with the Lunalilo Trust. He is also a decorated veteran with extensive community involvement in such varied organizations as the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, Kukui Gardens, Augustine Educational Foundation, Filipino Community Center, Filipino Chamber of Commerce, Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, Planned Giving Council, and City and County Neighborhood Commission.
Upon review of the statements submitted by the nominees and testimony submitted on their behalf, your Committee finds that the aforementioned nominees will work with compassion and commitment to assist in administering the functions of Directors of the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii. Their nominations have been made based upon their credentials, integrity, and a desire to make the University of Hawaii better through their participation on the Board.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Education that are attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, character, experience, and qualifications of the nominees, has found the nominees to be qualified for the positions to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nominations.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Education,
NORMAN SAKAMOTO, Chair |
