SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING A TASK FORCE TO EVALUATE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ASSUMING THE OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT OF THE ALOHA STADIUM.

 

WHEREAS, the Aloha Stadium was constructed over forty years ago; and

WHEREAS, the operations and management of the Aloha Stadium have resided in the statutorily established Stadium Authority throughout this period; and

WHEREAS, the opportunities for increased revenues from the Aloha Stadium were reported in a study by the firm of Steinberg, Moorad and Dunn; and

WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii athletic program is one of few Division 1A programs in the western part of the United States that does not have its own stadium; and

WHEREAS, the Legislative and Executive branches of government require additional information on costs, revenues, commitments, and other operational factors in order that they may render sound policy decisions; and

WHEREAS, an analysis of the future of the Aloha Stadium should involve the parties that will be affected; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-First Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Comptroller is requested to chair a task force to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the University of Hawaii assuming the operations and management of the Aloha Stadium; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force shall consist of one representative each from the Stadium Swap Meet, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the Stadium Authority, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, the University of Hawaii Athletic Program, and the University of Hawaii Board of Regents; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Comptroller shall submit a report to the Legislature of the findings and recommendations no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2002; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Comptroller, the Chairperson of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the Chairperson of the Stadium Authority, the Executive Director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, the Athletic Director of the University of Hawaii, and the Chairperson of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents.
