Description:

Appropriates $2 million for the Maui Youth and Family Services.

THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

765

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2001

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

Making an APPROPRIATION for the Maui youth and family services.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the Maui Youth and Family Services has served Hawaii's abused, neglected, and substance abusing youth for twenty-two years. The legislature further finds that there are more than fifty Hawaii youth on the mainland because Hawaii does not have the capacity to serve them. It has been well established that troubled youth have better success when they remain close to their culture, family, and friends. With only three hundred fifteen residential beds for the entire state, this new facility would increase that capacity by a total of thirty-two to forty-four.

Thus, the purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to Maui Youth and Family Services for the purpose of constructing a youth facility on donated lands.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $2,000,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, for funding Maui Youth and Family Services Residential Campus for Youth at Kula.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of human services for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
