A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR AN ANTI-SMOKING EDUCATION PROGRAM IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that cigarette smoking is not only hazardous to one's health but also a very difficult habit to quit. An effective approach to reducing the number of lifetime smokers is to educate young people of the dangers of tobacco use at an early age.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to establish an anti-smoking education program in the public schools.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ 25,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, for the establishment of an anti-smoking education program for children in public schools.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

 

 

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
