A BILL FOR AN ACT
making an appropriation to the macadamia nut industry.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Hawaii's macadamia nut industry is a significant part of the State's agricultural economy. The industry's growth, however, is limited by increased foreign competition and problems unique to the industry.
If Hawaii's macadamia nut industry is to grow, it will require funding to address the industry's special needs that include: a college of tropical agriculture and human resources extension agent specializing in macadamia nuts and tree replacement and water program subsidies.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to assist the macadamia nut industry.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $310,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, for:
(1) A College of Tropical Agriculture and $ 60,000
Human Resources extension agent
specializing in macadamia nuts
(2) Tree replacement and water programs $250,000
Total Amount $310,000
SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of agriculture for the purposes of this Act.
