requesting the legislature to design and implement a plan to make the capitol building safer for visitors and capitol employees.
WHEREAS, the Capitol building is very open and accessible to the public; and
WHEREAS, this open accessibility is a hallmark of our democratic process however, unfettered access exposes visitors and employees of the Capitol to potential acts of random violence; and
WHEREAS, adding metal detectors at all elevators and all public entrances to the building, including the public entrances to the House and Senate chambers, will make the Capitol safer both for the public who visits and the employees who work in the building; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that the Legislature is requested to design and implement a plan to make the Capitol building safer for visitors and Capitol employees, including but not limited to the installation of metal detectors; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
