HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

URGING THE LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE AN APPROPRIATION IN THE CAPITAL BUDGET FOR PURCHASE OF A NEW AIEA LIBRARY SITE So that the aiea library CAN BE RELOCATED TO THE FORMER AIEA SUGAR MILL SITE.

 

 

WHEREAS, the Aiea Neighborhood Board No. 20 has supported and continues to support relocating the Aiea Library to a new location and upgrading the facilities to allow more residents of the community to access and enjoy its resources; and

WHEREAS, the Aiea Neighborhood Board No. 20 has supported and continues to support the construction of the Aiea Town Center at the former Aiea Sugar Mill site, which site can also accommodate the Aiea Library; and

WHEREAS, the Aiea Sugar Mill site is an ideal location for the Aiea Library since it would allow residents using the Aiea Town Center and students at nearby schools, such as Aiea Intermediate, Aiea Elementary, Alvah Scott School, and Aiea High School, access to its resources and facilities; and

WHEREAS, the Aiea community has shown in numerous community meetings that it strongly supports the relocation of the Aiea Library to the Aiea Town Center site and an upgrading of the Aiea Library facility; and

WHEREAS, the 1.65 acre site is available and is the last vacant parcel suitable for the new library, and if not purchased this year, the opportunity may be lost; and

WHEREAS, a request for an appropriation of $2,500,000 has been included in the capital budget, which is now awaiting approval by the Legislature; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, the House Committee on Finance, and the Governor are urged to approve the appropriation in the capital budget for purchase of a new Aiea Library site so that the Aiea Library can be relocated to the former Aiea Sugar Mill; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Governor Benjamin Cayetano, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chairs of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means the House Committee on Finance, and members of Aiea Neighborhood Board No. 20.
