HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING A STUDY OF SAME-DAY VOTER REGISTRATION IN HAWAII.

 

WHEREAS, resident participation in our election process is the backbone of our democratic society in the United States; and

WHEREAS, involvement by the maximum number of voters is desired to keep our candidates and politicians accountable for their views and actions; and

WHEREAS, access to the process should be as open and user-friendly as possible; and

WHEREAS, voter turnout in recent elections have been low compared to the number of eligible citizens eighteen years of age and over; and

WHEREAS, during the 2000 election, Hawaii had the lowest turnout of voters in the last twelve years; and

WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii and the state elections office should consider options and ideas which involve more voters in the election process; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, the Senate concurring, that the State Office of Elections conduct a study to determine the feasibility of providing same-day voter registration for Hawaii residents who desire to participate in our elections; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the chief election officer.
