A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to education.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The federal government regularly rates the public schools in all fifty states. Unfortunately, Hawaii's public schools are ranked at the bottom of the list. One reason for this is that many of our public schools lack sufficient supplies for our public school students.
The legislature finds that for the quality of our educational system to improve, we must provide the necessary funding to provide our public schools with the supplies that they desperately need.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to increase the availability of supplies for our public school students.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $6,000,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002 for the purpose of increasing the availability of supplies for public schools.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
