Honorable Norman Mizuguchi
President of the Senate
Twentieth State Legislature
Regular Session of 2000
State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Ways and Means, to which was referred H.B.
No. 2801, H.D. 2, S.D. 1, entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO AGRICULTURE,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this bill is to require the Department of
Agriculture to conduct a survey and sampling of swine farms in
the State to determine the incidence of porcine respiratory and
reproductive syndrome.

Furthermore, this bill appropriates general funds for the
Department's survey and sampling.

Your Committee finds that the swine industry is a
significant portion of diversified agriculture in the State but
is currently threatened by incidents of the porcine respiratory
and reproductive syndrome. The extent of the disease in the
State is currently not known.

Your Committee has amended this measure by deleting the
appropriation section of the bill.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your
Committee on Ways and Means that is attached to this report, your
