                                   RE: H.B. No. 2584

Honorable Norman Mizuguchi
President of the Senate
Twentieth State Legislature
Regular Session of 2000
State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Ways and Means, to which was referred H.B.
No. 2584 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO THE FUEL TAX,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this bill is to repeal certain fuel tax
reporting requirements.

In particular, the bill deletes the requirement that fuel
distributors submit information about the total number of gallons
of fuel imported and information about the fuel distributor's
inventory. This information is no longer used by the Department
of Taxation.

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor and the Department of
Taxation testified in support of this bill.

Your Committee finds that this bill will reduce the filing
burden for fuel distributors, encouraging greater compliance, and
will simplify the forms and reporting requirements for the
Department of Taxation.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your
Committee on Ways and Means that is attached to this report, your
Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of H.B. No.
