                    SENATE  CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION
  REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO CONDUCT A
    FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING ADDITIONAL
    SAFE BIKEPATHS.


 1        WHEREAS, bicycle paths are facilities set aside for the
 2   preferential or exclusive use of bicycles and are physically
 3   separated from a highway; and
 4   
 5        WHEREAS, the department of transportation, when requested,
 6   provides technical assistance and advice to counties in
 7   recommending construction standards for bikepaths; and
 8   
 9        WHEREAS, there is a critical shortage of safe bikepaths
10   for use by the many bicyclists in Hawaii; and 
11   
12        WHEREAS, there is a need for additional safe bikepaths to
13   be identified and constructed; now, therefore,
14   
15        BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twentieth Legislature
16   of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2000, the House of
17   Representatives concurring, that the Department of
18   Transportation is requested to conduct a statewide study of
19   bicycle use in Hawaii for the purpose of assessing the adequacy
20   of bikepaths and determining the feasibility of providing
21   additional safe bikepaths in various areas throughout the
22   State; and
23   
24        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of
25   Transportation submit its findings and recommendations to the
26   Legislature no later than twenty days before the convening of
27   the Regular Session of 2001; and
28   
29        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this
30   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of
31   Transportation.
