                    SENATE RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO ESTABLISH SUMMER
SCHOOL CLASSES FOR STUDENTS IN WEST MAUI.

WHEREAS, all the children of Hawaii deserve a quality
  public school education; and

WHEREAS, part of providing a quality public school
education to students is the accessibility to education and
  educational facilities; and

WHEREAS, in order to attain higher achievement or to
receive remedial instruction, many students attend summer
school classes at their nearby public school campus; and

WHEREAS, in West Maui, since no summer school programs
exist in that region, students who wish to attend or need to
attend summer school classes must travel great distances
  outside of their community; and

WHEREAS, requiring West Maui students who wish to attend
or need to attend summer school classes to travel outside of
their community places an unnecessary burden on the student's
entire family, oftentimes requiring the family to make a
decision between committing to transporting the child to a
remote summer school or not sending the child at all; and

WHEREAS, a student's education should not be compromised
because of the student's geographic location; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twentieth Legislature
of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2000, that the
Department of Education is requested to establish a summer
school program for West Maui students or provide access to
technology that would allow the West Maui students to
participate in classes from a remote site; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this
Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education.
