                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO THE WAIKIKI WAR MEMORIAL AND NATATORIUM.
 


BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Chapter 6E, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended
 
 2 by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to
 
 3 read as follows:
 
 4      "§6E-     Waikiki War Memorial and Natatorium state
 
 5 monument.  There is established the Waikiki War Memorial and
 
 6 Natatorium state monument as a historic landmark on Oahu to be
 
 7 administered by the department of land and natural resources and
 
 8 to consist of those lands and coastal waters that the department
 
 9 determines to be essential to the preservation of the visual,
 
10 cultural, and historical aspects and significance of the Waikiki
 
11 War Memorial and Natatorium.  Subject to legislative
 
12 appropriation, the department shall restore and rededicate the
 
13 arched memorial wall to the people of Hawaii to be a living
 
14 memorial.  Any document purporting to transfer ownership,
 
15 operation, and control of the Waikiki War Memorial and Natatorium
 
16 to the city and county of Honolulu shall be void.  The department
 
17 is charged with the preservation and upkeep of the Waikiki War
 
18 Memorial and Natatorium as a historic landmark."
 
19      SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.
