DESCRIPTION:
Beginning 7/1/99, increases mileage compensation for jurors from
33 to 37 cents.  Appropriates $69,166 for FY 1999-2000 and

                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT
RELATING TO JURORS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 612-8, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended by amending subsection (a) to read as follows:
 
 3      "(a)  Each juror shall be paid $30 for each day of actual
 
 4 attendance at court.  In addition, each juror shall be paid [33]
 
 5 37 cents for each mile actually and necessarily traveled in going
 
 6 to and from court.  A person who appears at the time for which
 
 7 that person is summoned to court for jury duty may be allowed the
 
 8 mileage fee although the person, upon that person's request, is
 
 9 subsequently excused or exempted from jury service."
 
10      SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
11 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $69,166, or so much
 
12 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, and the
 
13 same sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year
 
14 2000-2001, for increased juror compensation.  The sums
 
15 appropriated shall be expended by the judiciary for the purposes
 
16 of this Act.
 
17      SECTION 3.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
18 New statutory material is underscored.
 
19      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
