                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR PACON INTERNATIONAL.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  PACON is the acronym for the Pacific Congress on
 
 2 Marine Science and Technology.  The Hawaii chapter of PACON
 
 3 International has been incorporated in the State of Hawaii to
 
 4 support the international and local programs for its membership
 
 5 of ocean scientists, engineers, and educators residing in Hawaii.
 
 6 The Hawaii chapter supports their dialogue with the international
 
 7 community through its membership in PACON International.  The
 
 8 primary activity of PACON International is to sponsor a major
 
 9 international ocean science and technology meeting every two
 
10 years.
 
11      The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to express
 
12 strong legislative support for PACON International.
 
13      SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
14 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $40,000, or so much
 
15 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, to support
 
16 the activities of PACON International; provided that no funds
 
17 shall be made available under this Act unless PACON International
 
18 matches those funds dollar-for-dollar with its own resources.
 
19      SECTION 3.  The sum appropriated shall be expended by the
 
20 department of business, economic development, and tourism for the

 1 purposes of this Act.
 
 2      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
