                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO JUDICIAL SALARIES.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 602-2, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended to read as follows:
 
 3      "§602-2 Salary, supreme court justices.  Effective
 
 4 [January 1, 1989,] July 1, 1999, the salary of the chief justice
 
 5 of the supreme court shall be [$90,699] $99,519 a year and the
 
 6 salary of each associate justice of the supreme court shall be
 
 7 [$89,699] $98,469  a year.  Effective [January 1, 1990,] July 1,
 
 8 2000, the salary of the chief justice of the supreme court shall
 
 9 be [$94,780] $104,495 a year and the salary of each associate
 
10 justice of the supreme court shall be [$93,780] $103,392 a year." 
 
11      SECTION 2.  Section 602-52, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
12 amended to read as follows:
 
13      "§602-52  Salary.  Effective [January 1, 1989,] July 1,
 
14 1999, the salary of the chief judge of the intermediate appellate
 
15 court shall be [$87,199] $95,844 a year and the salary of each
 
16 associate judge shall be [$85,699] $94,269 a year.  Effective
 
17 [January 1, 1990,] July 1, 2000, the salary of the chief judge of
 
18 the intermediate appellate court shall be [$91,280] $100,636 a

 1 year and the salary of each associate judge shall be [$89,780]
 
 2 $98,982 a year."
 
 3      SECTION 3.  Section 603-5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 4 amended to read as follows:
 
 5      "§603-5 Salary of circuit court judges.  Effective
 
 6 [January 1, 1989,] July 1, 1999, the salary of each circuit court
 
 7 judge of the various circuit courts of the State shall be
 
 8 [$82,699] $91,119 a year.  Effective [January 1, 1990,] July 1,
 
 9 2000, the salary of each circuit court judge of the various
 
10 circuit courts of the State shall be [$86,780] $95,675 a year."
 
11      SECTION 4.  Section 604-2.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
12 amended to read as follows:
 
13      "§604-2.5  Salary of district judges.  Effective [January 1,
 
14 1989,] July 1, 1999, the salary of each district court judge of
 
15 the various district courts of the State shall be [$77,699]
 
16 $85,869 a year.  Effective [January 1, 1990,] July 1, 2000, the
 
17 salary of each district court judge of the various district
 
18 courts of the State shall be [$81,780] $90,162 a year.
 
19      Whenever the chief justice appoints a district court judge
 
20 of any of the various district courts of the State to serve
 
21 temporarily as a circuit court judge of any of the various
 
22 circuit courts of the State, the judge shall receive per diem

 1 compensation for the days on which actual service is rendered,
 
 2 based on the monthly rate of compensation paid to a circuit court
 
 3 judge.  For the purpose of determining per diem compensation in
 
 4 this section, a month shall be deemed to consist of twenty-one
 
 5 days."
 
 6      SECTION 5.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
 7 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $        , or so much
 
 8 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, and the
 
 9 sum of $        , or so much thereof as may be necessary for
 
10 fiscal year 2000-2001, to provide for judicial salaries.
 
11      SECTION 6.  The sums appropriated shall be expended by the
 
12 judiciary for the purposes of this Act.
 
13      SECTION 7.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
14 New statutory material is underscored.
 
15      SECTION 8.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
