                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO THE HAWAII TEACHER STANDARDS BOARD.


BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 302A-805, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended to read as follows:
 
 3      "§302A-805  Teachers; license or credential required;
 
 4 renewals.  Beginning with the 1997-1998 school year, no person
 
 5 shall serve as a teacher in a public school without first having
 
 6 obtained a license or credential from the department under this
 
 7 subpart.  All licenses issued by the department shall be
 
 8 renewable every five years, if the licensee continues to satisfy
 
 9 the board's licensing standards.  All credentials issued by the
 
10 department shall be renewable every year, up to a maximum of
 
11 three years, if the credential holder continues to satisfy the
 
12 board's credentialing standards and actively pursues appropriate
 
13 licensing.  The three-year renewal period for such credentials
 
14 may be extended for one year by the Hawaii teacher standards
 
15 board on a case-by-case basis for those teachers actively
 
16 pursuing and satisfactorily progressing in the pursuit of
 
17 obtaining a license under this subpart, and subject to the
 
18 conditions above.  Such extensions may be granted no more than
 
19 twice for any individual."
