                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO THE EMPLOYEES' RETIREMENT SYSTEM.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 88-21, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended by adding a new definition to be appropriately inserted
 
 3 and to read as follows:
 
 4      ""Compensation" or "annual compensation":  the basic rate of
 
 5 pay, including shortage differential pay, for service performed
 
 6 in a particular position but excluding overtime, other
 
 7 differentials, and supplementary pay."
 
 8      SECTION 2.  Section 88-261, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 9 amended by amending subsection (a) to read as follows:
 
10      "(a)  The following words and phrases as used in this part
 
11 shall have the same meanings as defined in section 88-21, unless
 
12 a different meaning is plainly required by the context:
 
13 "accumulated contributions"; "actuarial equivalent"; "average
 
14 final compensation"; "beneficiary"; "compensation"; "county";
 
15 "employee"; "medical board"; "retirant"; "retirement allowance";
 
16 "service"; and "system"."
 
17      SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.
 
18      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2000.
