                   A BILL FOR AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO ESTABLISH MAUI FOOD BANK, INC.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the Maui branch of

the Oahu-based Hawaii Foodbank, Inc. was closed abruptly in

September, 1994, leaving it with a gap in funding to maintain its

existing operations. The legislature further finds that Maui

Food Bank, Inc. has continued to operate a food distribution

warehouse and a direct service hot meal and emergency food box

program. The purpose of this Act is to appropriate state funds

to supplement county and private funding to assist with the

establishment of Maui Food Bank, Inc. as an independent

organization.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general

revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $40,000, or so much

thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, for a

grant-in-aid to establish Maui Food Bank, Inc.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of

human services for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
