                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE HANA COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER,
   HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Hana, Maui,

consistently produces some of the worst health and socio-economic

indicators in the State. In order to improve the delivery of

health care in the area, the legislature transferred the state

operated Hana Medical Center to the non-profit Hana Community

Health Center, which established a three-year strategic plan to

address the future needs of the rural community, focusing on the

development of a wellness center. The purpose of this Act is to

assist the Hana Community Health Center in development of the

center.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general

revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ , or so much

thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, for a

grant-in-aid to support the development of a "wellness center" at

the Hana Community Health Center in Hana, Maui.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the

department of health for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
