                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the department of

labor and industrial relations has reduced the number of its

occupational safety and health inspectors from eighteen to ten,

due to budget constraints. The legislature further finds that

fewer inspectors results in less frequent inspections of premises

and equipment, resulting in possible jeopardy of the public

health and safety.

The purpose of this Act is to ensure that there are an

adequate number of occupational safety and health inspectors to

protect the public health and safety.

SECTION 2. Effective July 1, 1999, the number of positions

for inspectors under the occupational safety and health division

of the department of labor and industrial relations shall be not

less than eighteen fully funded positions.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999, and

shall be repealed on June 30, .
