                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR KAUAI FOOD BANK, INC.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the Kauai branch of

the Oahu-based Hawaii Foodbank, Inc. was closed abruptly in

September, 1994, leaving it with a gap in funding to maintain its

existing operations. The legislature further finds that Kauai

Food Bank, Inc. has continued to operate through six neighborhood

pantries, four emergency food box programs, and one hundred eight

nonprofit agencies, in addition to the assistance provided by its

many volunteers. The legislature also finds that Kauai Food

Bank, Inc. feeds about 6,500 people each month or about fifteen

per cent of Kauai county's population, and that half of those

people being fed are children. The purpose of this Act is to

appropriate state funds for Kauai Food Bank, Inc.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general

revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $60,000, or so much

thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, for a

grant-in-aid to Kauai Food Bank, Inc.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the

department of human services for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
