                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

RELATING TO ORGAN DONATION. 


 1       WHEREAS, state law provides numerous options for the
 2   expression of a desire to donate one's organs; and
 3   
 4       WHEREAS, in 1999, the Organ Donor Center of Hawaii shows a
 5   62% increase in the number of donors in the state and an 80%
 6   increase in the number of transplants performed in the state;
 7   and
 8   
 9       WHEREAS, federal law is such that organs donated in Hawaii
10   will most likely stay within state, benefiting the citizens of
11   Hawaii; and
12   
13       WHEREAS, there remains a problem in satisfying the demand
14   for organ donation, there being over 220 people currently on
15   the waiting list for organ transplant; and
16   
17       WHEREAS, the remaining obstacles to increased organ
18   donation stem from numerous misconceptions; now, therefore,
19   
20       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
21   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
22   of 2000, requests the Legislative Reference Bureau to conduct a
23   study in conjunction with the Organ Donor Center of Hawaii in
24   order to determine the most efficient way to educate the people
25   of Hawaii about organ donation and to dispel the misconceptions
26   which prevent organ donation.
