                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

HONORING ELLA "ELLY" TEPPER AS THE HAWAII STATE TEACHER OF THE
   YEAR.



 1       WHEREAS, professional educators, as motivators, role
 2   models, and guardians of Hawaii's youth, undertake great
 3   responsibility and commitment in cultivating, nurturing, and
 4   developing our State's most precious asset:  Hawaii's youth;
 5   and
 6   
 7       WHEREAS, ELLA "ELLY" TEPPER, born to a Russian-Jewish
 8   immigrant family in Brooklyn, New York, consisting of artists,
 9   thinkers, and teachers whose lessons were about courage and
10   challenge, overcoming persecution and obstacles, the value of
11   study and learning, the obligation to resist injustice, the
12   roots and the flowering of culture and self, and about caring
13   and taking care, has been instrumental in nurturing the
14   educational needs of Hawaii's students; and
15   
16       WHEREAS, it was in 1970 that ELLA "ELLY" TEPPER moved to
17   Hawaii to begin what she calls her "journey to becoming a real
18   teacher, and where, she says, "the children of paradise have
19   been teaching her;" and
20   
21       WHEREAS, ELLA "ELLY" TEPPER believes that the best way to
22   teach a student is to be learners together, working with a
23   mutual purpose, full of spiritual mystery and power, with a
24   mutual language; now, therefore,
25   
26       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
27   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
28   of 2000, that this body hereby congratulates ELLA "ELLY"
29   TEPPER, a third grade teacher at Keolu Elementary School and
30   recipient of the prestigious Hawaii State Teacher of the Year
31   Award for her outstanding accomplishments and contributions to
32   public school education in our State, and extends to her its
33   sincere mahalo for a job well done.
